Protecting aviation from cyber attacks

The airline industry’s susceptibility to cyber-attack is increasing. Airlines want to create a seamless digital experience for their customers, and so roll out products such as apps, web portals, and inflight entertainment. Such products are great for the customer but, often, due to the large amounts of data they handle, they simply create another entry point for hackers. Additional threats and entry points are endless - technologies that are designed to help, often have the adverse effect.

According to PwC’s 2015 Global Airline CEO Survey, 85% of airline CEOs in the study view cybersecurity as a significant risk, likely reflecting the highly sensitive nature of flight systems and passenger data. Compared that with 61% of CEOs in other industries, and the importance becomes clear.

Recent airline data breaches have led to harsh criticism of the industry’s IT and cybersecurity efforts. In the last six months, there have been three major breaches of leading airlines. In all three cases, hackers took advantage of security flaws in the airline’s new technology systems.
